Anticholinergic medications and cognitive function in the elderly

Abstract

Anticholinergic drugs are commonly used in the elderly. We studied the effect of starting and stopping the anticholinergic drugs benztropine and triphenhexidyl on neuropsychological function in 21 elderly patients. We found a significant improvement in neuropsychological function when these drugs were discontinued and a deterioration when they were commenced.
