A parallel between the preselection effect in psychomotor memory and the generation effect in verbal memory
Abstract
Compares the preselection effect in memory for movements and the generation effect in the verbal domain. Empirical results in the 2 areas are quite similar: improved retention and performance of S-generated as opposed to experimenter-determined to-be-remembered information. Theoretical accounts of each effect are compared, and it is suggested that the preselection/generation effect demonstrates a single memory phenomenon. (16 ref)
