An exception reporting information system for ill-structured decision problems

Abstract

Quality control and cognitive mapping methods are combined to reduce the deficiencies of current techniques for designing exception reporting systems for ill-structured decision problems. The approach is tested using ten managers faced with the need of evaluating the performance of their subordinates. The results are very encouraging. The information system detected over 97 percent of the “exceptions” and in no case did it identify expected performance as requiring attention.
