Dr. Scott Gmora is a distinguished Associate Professor of Surgery at McMaster University and a renowned Canadian expert in minimally invasive bariatric surgery. Holding dual board certifications (FRCSC, FACS), Dr. Gmora completed his medical education at Queen's University, followed by a general surgery residency at the University of Calgary. His extensive specialized training includes prestigious fellowships in minimally invasive gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery at Columbia University’s St. Luke-Roosevelt Hospital in New York, and trauma and critical care surgery at the University of Miami's Ryder Trauma Center.

Deeply committed to advancing surgical practice, Dr. Gmora has provided provincial leadership by leading task forces focused on optimizing weight loss surgery protocols and advocating for bariatric surgery within the broader medical community. His clinical excellence is complemented by his significant contributions to surgical education at McMaster, where he serves as the Course Director for the Basic and Advanced Laparoscopic Training Programs for general surgery residents. He is also a senior faculty member for McMaster University's fellowship training program in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, training general surgeons who are subspecializing in bariatric surgery. Dr. Gmora has helped train countless bariatric surgeons currently practicing in Canada and abroad. His passion and dedication to teaching have earned him multiple awards, underscoring his profound impact on shaping the skills and careers of future surgeons. Additionally, he is contributes nationally as a board examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
