Walter Craig
Professor, Mathematics and Statistics

Walter Craig is a Professor of Mathematics and the Canada Research Chair of Mathematical Analysis and its Applications at McMaster University. His doctorate is from the Courant Institute - NYU (1981), and he has held faculty positions at the California Institute of Technology, Stanford University and Brown University, where he was department chair, before moving with his wife to McMaster in the year 2000. In Canada he was Director of the Fields Institute from 2013 - 2015. He is a prominent mathematical analyst and applied mathematician, whose research focus is on the mathematical physics of waves. He is known for his work on ocean wave dynamics, including tsunami and rogue wave modeling, where his contributions have been to theoretical aspects as well as practical applications of mathematics to fundamental problems in nonlinear wave phenomena. He also works on many other aspects of wave propagation, a topic that encompasses the theory of partial differential equations, Hamiltonian dynamical systems, and that has applications to many areas of physical science, including small divisor problems in Hamiltonian partial differential equations, microlocal propagation of singularities for the Schroedinger equation, and progress on the important issue of regularity for solutions of the Navier - Stokes equations. He has authored more than 100 research articles. He has organized several thematic programs at the Fields Institute, and has served on the Fields Institute Scientific Advisory Panel (2000-2005), the Scientific Nominating Committee (2001-2005) and the Board of Directors (2009-2012, 2015-2016), as well as on the Comite' Consultatif of the Centre de Recherches Mathe'matiques (2001-2005) and the Scientific Review Panel of the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences (2007-2013). He has held a Bantrell, a Sloan and a Killam Research Fellowships, and has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, of the AAAS and AMS, as well as a Fields Institute Fellow.
