Dr. Melanie Bedore is an Assistant Professor (teaching stream) in the School of Earth, Environment & Society. Her approach teaching centres on active learning, social justice theory and practice, and facilitating deep learning within and beyond the university classroom.
Melanie’s background blends critical food studies, urban and economic geography, social justice theory and practice, and public policy. Her research has examined uneven retail food access in cities (the food desert problem), urban poverty and inequality, and city-regional governance in small and mid-sized deindustrializing cities. She has collaborated with community food groups and her students to think about progressive urban food policy and sustainable food systems. She has published her research in The Geographical Journal, Social & Cultural Geography, The Canadian Geographer, Urban Studies, and Studies in Social Justice. She is a trained human geographer with a doctoral degree from Queen’s University and additional degrees in public policy and administration from Queen’s University and Carleton University.
